Little Red Riding Hood
More widely known, Little Red Riding Hood is a European fairy tale about a young girl and a Big Bad Wolf.
It is picturing a girl at the edge of adulthood and the dangers lurking at the sides of the track (she’s been told not to leave), the consequences of decisions and in some versions the rebirth of the girl as a woman.
It is one of the most documented stories in terms of changes and adaptions as there are numerous recorded versions of it. In the first published one by Charles Perrault, known as Le Petit Chaperon Rouge, the wolf falls asleep at the end after eating the grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood. In some versions there is a man who comes to the rescue and frees them and in others she escapes with no help from any male or older female figure, instead using her own cunning. Besides the overt warning about talking to strangers, there are many interpretations of the classic fairy tale, many of them sexual.
